UCSB Bioengineering Building

Morley provided concrete services for the BioEngineering Building at the University of California, Santa Barbara. This multi-disciplinary facility serves the engineering and life sciences division of the campus.

The structure itself is a four-story cast-in-place concrete structure with a vivarium in the basement and laboratories above. The building includes a 100-seat lecture hall. The exterior skin consists of a substantial amount of architectural concrete. Mock-ups and quality reviews were necessary prior to placing the final concrete. The BioEngineering program was new for UCSB and the University viewed this building as a tremendous addition to the campus’s architecture.

 

Sustainable features include the use of natural ventilation due to its proximity to the ocean, daylighting and integration of geothermal and chilled beam technologies.

 

The Type 1A structure incorporates cast-in-place architectural concrete, featuring both board form and smooth-finish architectural features.
