Morley Construction Company performed structural concrete forming, placing, and finishing for the seismic retrofit, preservation, and adaptive reuse of the Grand Central Air Terminal building in Glendale. As the first commercial airport to serve the Los Angeles area, the historic structure was transformed into a creative office space and corporate events facility.
Scope of work included a seismic upgrade of existing foundations and installation of new foundations, construction of a new elevator pit, new interior slab-on-grade, concrete fill on metal deck, grouting and repairs to the historic structure, and repairs to an existing separate bunker structure on site. Approach sometimes had to be revisited due to unknown conditions uncovered from multiple remodels undergone in preceding decades. Morley paid careful attention while working to maintain the historic integrity of the structure.
