Now converted for telecom use, the Robinson’s May department store in downtown Los Angeles underwent a seismic retrofit and repair which included shoring; excavation; and the installation of new foundations, shear walls, drag beams and a new LADWP vault substation. Slabs were reinforced, columns were encased, existing openings were infilled and new topping and built-up slabs were installed to create new elevations within the structure, all of which tie the 1914 concrete frame building to the 1922 steel frame addition.
