Morley Construction Company provided structural concrete subcontracting services for this cutting-edge cancer treatment facility, one of only a dozen centers with this technology at the time of construction. This 123,000 square-foot outpatient center consists of one below-grade and two above-grade levels. It features a diagnostic department, outpatient clinic, patient treatment area, and healing garden.
The proton treatment equipment is housed in massive concrete bunkers. Walls and decks were constructed up to 13-feet thick using medium-density shielding concrete. The extensive use of shielding concrete ensures that proton radiation utilized in certain cancer treatments safely remains in the designated treatment areas. To achieve this, Morley had to work with ready-mix concrete suppliers to find an economic balance between strength, density, temperature, and thickness parameters. To find the right solution, the team created several full-scale mock-ups of the specific wall sections to determine which mix variation would best meet the Owner’s needs. In total, Morley placed approximately 20,000 cubic yards of concrete on the project.
