Rockwell Building 80

Rockwell Building 80

Rockwell International Corporation required uninterrupted operational capability at its corporate headquarters even if a magnitude 7.0 earthquake should occur on the Newport-Inglewood Fault, passing less than a mile from the building. Morley Construction Company provided dynamic base isolation of the eight-story information systems center, which remained fully occupied throughout construction.

The project included progressive cutting of approximately 55 existing columns and the elevator/stair core; the addition of ductile reinforced concrete frame to a portion of the exterior; and the revision to all building utility services passing through the plane of isolation. Morley provided Rockwell a building with a maximum differential of 14 inches in any direction. These advanced services led to an Award of Merit from the American Society of Engineers.
